Recent news

Our very own Jim Berrios was once again a speaker at the recent Communities in Schools of Kent Annual Breakfast and helped raise over $14,000. Which is great feat considering todays economy. Also featured was a Kent Phoenix Academy student who has overcome true adversity. She is back on the right track working towards a successful future. Jim is also a board member of the Kent School District.

"Way to go Jim!"

Youth Programs

Youth Services Committee

2008/2009 Committee Chair:
Michele Cambell

This committee has responsibility for supporting a number of service projects and activities that affect the school-aged youth in our community.  From bicycle repair and refurbishment to a bridge-building competition, essay contest to annual Kids Christmas Party, and from sports team sponsorship to an elementary reading program, this committee has a great presence in the community we serve.

The following outlines some of our Youth Service projects:

Essay Contest - Now in its 28th year, this is one of our premier projects.

Sports Team Sponsorship - financial sponsorship is provided for scholarships to needy children.

Bicycle Program -
Repair and refurbishment of used bicycles, which are then donated to needy families and social service agencies for distribution to deserving children.

Bicycle Helmet Program -
helmets are provided to the children who receive bicycles, following established state-mandated safety requirement.

Safety Fairs Support - Through a partnership with Kent Youth and Family Services, support is provided for a youth recreation program at public housing communities.

Kid's Christmas Party - As part of an annual partnership with other service Clubs, and sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Kent - Meridian, this annual event brings smiles and holiday cheer to more than 80 children who might not otherwise experience the joy of a holiday gift and a visit from Santa!

Kent Elementary Reading Program - our members volunteer to read regularly to students at Kent Elementary, helping them to enhance their reading skills, as well as to practice/learn public speaking.  Students are also provided with books which they can take home.
